I read a brief blog by D. Kuropatwa, and I found his entry Make'em Laugh! and insightful little reminder. He reminded teachers to not forget the importance of laughter in the classroom. I think teachers often get so swept into the fears of standardization and cramming information in that they forget to laugh every now and again with students.
Now I'm a silly person at heart, so laughter for me is not a problem. However, I do want my students to see me as a professional. I want to learn how to find a balance so I become a professional and a warm person.
I always think a great think to remember is to learn to laugh at yourself. Be prepared to make mistakes and embarass yourself, but learn to laugh it off!

Rachel,
I see you have found Darren's blog. He is awesome and a very excellent role model. However, when you commented on his blog you didnt give your URL for him to use as a track back.
Have you seen examples of humor in the classroom where you are observing that help the students get more out of the instruction?
If so please share.
Sheryl
Hi Rachel,
Thanks for the link! I've always felt that the atmosphere we create in our classrooms goes a long way towards helping students learn. But more than that, the content we teach, the excellent lesson we spend hours agonizing over and planning that does go over oh so well will quickly be forgotten.
What students most remember about the classes they had is how they felt about being there. If you think back to your classes in high school, I'm going to guess that the ones you most remember were the ones where the teacher made you feel good about being there. Laughter helps. ;-)
Cheers!
Darren
BTW, I noticed you have allowed only blogger.com users to leave comments. If you go into the [settings] tab in your blog you can change it to allow anyone to comment -- you'll get more comments that way. ;-)
The hard part, I think, is remembering to enjoy our subject matter. I love history, I love talking about it and thinking about it, and I also love teaching children and enjoying their energy.
I forget both of those things, sometimes, when the class gets out of hand. But you learn and go on.
I'm having one of my very best years ever. When I laugh too much my ear hurts (don't ask, I can't explain it) to the point where I almost can't move until it stops. I've spent so much time laughing in my language arts class that the kids can see the ear thing coming. "Oohhhh, hold on, her eyes are getting squinty and she's putting her head on her shoulder, we've done it again!" Which of course only makes me laugh harder.
We're currently reading Shakespeare and we spend a lot of time laughing at the play. If I do anything well this year, it will be that the kids leave my room with a healthy respect for his humor and no fear of hearing the word Shakespeare in an English class again.
It's hard to remember to laugh when the SOLs are hanging over your head, but sometimes it's the only the thing that makes the day a successful one.
